Heavy smoke from a chemical plant Friday night in southern Taiwan earned the owners a five-million-yuan government penalty for air pollution violations, local media report.

At about 8 p.m., fire broke out at the Llancheng Chemical plant in Kaohsiung City’s industrial zone. Nearly 60 firefighters and more than 30 emergency vehicles were immediately dispatched to the scene.

The fire was brought under control within three hours with no injuries reported.

A cause has not been determined.
