A chemical fire Thursday morning at a metal finishing plant near Los Angeles triggered an evacuation of surrounding neighborhoods.

"Due to the fire and an abundance of caution, local residents near the structure fire were ask(ed) to evacuate," a notice posted to the Brea Police Twitter site states. "The Brea Community Center was made available to area residents as a shelter while fire crews worked on extinguishing the fire."

The evacuation order was lifted shortly before 7 a..m. Thursday, police report. Officials report significant damage to the plant but no major injuries, according to ABC 7 News.
