A massive fire broke out Sunday morning at a grain and seed processing plant in south central Paraguay specializing in exporting natural and organic products.

The Mariano Roque Alonso Fire Department reported a fire of “large proportions” sweeping through facilities at Alquimia SA near the Silvio Pettirossi International Airport. A first report about the fire was posted to the department’s Facebook page at 4:20 a.m.

“We request you avoid transit through that area for better deployment of emergency vehicles,” the post states.

Personnel from several department representing different cities across the region were on hand to battle the blaze.

“Msany thanks to the sister companies from other cities that supported the work extinguishing the fire at Mariano Roque Alonso,” the Facebook page states.

Mariano Roque Alonso is a district in the Gran Asuncion metropolitan area.
