With the number of firefighters fit for duty being rapidly diminished by either being ill with COVID-19 or being quarantined, how much help can communities expect from the fully equipped and trained fire brigades maintained by many plants and refineries worldwide?
These brigades often answer calls to assist local municipal and volunteer fire departments in critical situations, such as tank car fires and hazmat emergencies. However, different companies have different policies governing whether their in-house firefighters can respond outside the plant gates. Are these brigades so hard-hit by the pandemic that they aren’t able to help? Or, are they an important stopgap we can depend on in this crisis?
