Grant Tokiwa, batallion chief with the Chevron refinery in Richmond, California, briefs us on the ins and outs of TEEX's Crude by Rail live-fire project. This rail car derailment prop simulates a flammable liquid rail car incident. There are multiple flammable liquid leak sources on each of the three cars. There are also a number of high pressure flammable gas leaks as well. The man way area on top of the cars and the unloading valves on the bottom provide multiple opportunities for flammable liquid fire fighting. With the burning liquid leaks coming off the cars, a spill fire is created. On the rear car there are three hazardous material leaks as well. Firefighters receive instruction in the proper use of equipment, attack methods, approaches, foam applications techniques, compatibility of foams and dry chemical extinguishers.
