Smoke rises from a burning shoe factory in Nova Serrana, Brazil, Tuesday

Two workers died and another is in serious condition after a fire Tuesday afternoon at a shoe factory in southeastern Brazil.

Nova Serrana, the location of the fire, is a municipality in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil.

Passersby managed to pull the surviving worker to safety after the fire erupted at about 12:30 p.m., the website Estado de Minas reports. The worker suffered serious burns.

First reports indicated an explosion preceded the fire. However, it was later determined that those reports were false.

More than 17 hours after the first report, firefighters were still on the scene protecting against flamers rekindling.
