An explosion Sunday morning at a biofuels plant in southeast China injured two people while two others remain missing, local media report.

Workers were conducting maintenance in a 75-acre tank farm at the Longyan Zhuoyue New Energy Co., Ltd. biofuels plant in the Fujian Province city of Longyan when the blast occurred. The tank farm stores waste oil from fryers and grease traps, vegetable oil and bio-diesel.

Most of the tanks burning after the blast contain diesel oil. However, at least two tanks containing formaldehyde are also on fire, Reuters reports.

Local fire and rescue agencies deployed seven teams to the scene after the first alarm. Experts in hazardous materials from Xiamen, Zhangzhou and Quanzhou were also in route.

Eight hours later more than 100 firefighters were on the scene. Hundreds of residents from the surrounding area were evacuated.

The plant specializes in converting the waste oil from restaurants and food processing into bio-diesel fuel.
