A worker suffered serious burns to his upper body Thursday in an explosion at a factory in east Florida manufacturing hand sanitizer.

The injured worker was transported by helicopter to Orlando Regional Medical Center, the Titusville Fire Department Facebook page reports.

Battalion Chief Greg Sutton told WESH TV that the reported explosion left minor damage to the interior of the plant.

“There’s mild evidence of a percussion or some sort of, I don’t know if you want to say explosion, but visible damage around the area – nothing significant,” Sutton said.

Ordinarily, the factory produces sunscreen products. However, production at the time of the blast involved hand sanitizer which is manufactured using isopropyl alcohol or ethanol in a two-to-one proportion to aloe vera gel.
