A chemical reaction triggered an explosion Monday morning at a chemical plant in North Carolina, local media report.
Sodium chloride violently reacted with sulfuric acid to create vapor cloud at Brainerd Chemical in Dunn. Firefighters and hazmat technicians were able to contain the release before it could blow into a neighborhood near the plant.
Evacuations might have been necessary if the vapor cloud had gotten off plant property, fire officials said.
More than 40 emergency personnel responded to the plant site, local media report.
The explosion damaged the roof and a wall of the plant building.
