Six families lost their homes Wednesday evening in northeastern Argentina when a paint factory fire spread into the surrounding neighborhood, local media report.

The Pinturas Misioneras paint factory in Garupa produced flames reaching several meters into the sky. Explosions were heard inside the burning facility as aerosol cans of spray paint burst and ignited from the heat.

The smoke generated by the fire could be seen several kilometers away, local media report.

Fire officials speculate that the flames originated in a large vat where resin, solvent and additives are combined, judging from the extensive damage in that area. Of the five workers on duty, two suffered smoke inhalation and the rest suffered minor injuries ranging from mild burns to a dislocated knee.
