Traffic was halted in both directions when a tanker truck exploded in Akron, Ohio, Tuesday.

One person died when a tanker truck crashed and burned in Akron, Ohio, Tuesday morning, local media report.

Burning oil from the wreck reached the nearby Cuyahoga River and poured into storm drains along Route 8. Oil booms were placed in the river to contain the spill.

Two public school were evacuated due to heavy smoke from the fire.

Firefighters found an automobile trapped underneath the burning tanker truck which belonged to Holland Oil and Gas. No details of the crash scene investigation have been released.

The highway was closed in both directions for several hours. The northbound lane remained closed into Tuesday evening.
