A fire Wednesday afternoon during a maintenance operation at a waste incineration plant in northwestern France killed one worker and injured five others, local media report.

At about 4:30 p.m., the fire broke out as maintenance was conducted near a turbine at the Valorys waste incineration plant in Pluzunet. The fire resulting in the death of a 46-year-old technician, although no information has been released on specific cause of death.

The five injured all suffered carbon monoxide poisoning, two seriously enough to be transported by helicopter.

Firefighters theorize that a turbine somehow restarted during maintenance, flinging hot oil around the area.

Nearly 40 firefighters responded to the fire scene.
