Smoke fills the storage area of a tire factory near Rome Thursday.

A pallet loaded with product caught fire at a tire factory in central Italy at about noon Thursday, local media report.

The Rome fire brigade dispatched three rescue vehicles to Trelleborg Wheels in Trivoli, manufacturer of tires for heavy vehicles. Firefighters arrived to find the storage area filled with choking smoke.

Using breathing apparatus, the firefighters entered the building and extinguished the blaze with fire extinguishers.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
