Authorities ordered the establishment of a 1,000-foot safety perimeter Thursday morning around a building at Shell’s Harbor Island petroleum terminal in Seattle after nearly 13,800 gallons of gasoline spilled.
Operators discovered the spill at about 6 a.m. Thursday and alerted the Seattle Fire Department, local media report. The spill happened in a contained indoor area.
All personnel inside the safety perimeter were evacuated. A hazardous materials team from Shell was called in to handle mitigation.
Heavy fog and road closures created a traffic backup on Harbor Island. The spilled gasoline did not reach any waterways.
