Flames engulfed a high-performance battery plant in southeastern France Wednesday morning.

At about 9:30 a.m., nearly 50 firefighters with Departmental Service of Fire and Rescue 38 rushed to the Wattalps factory in Moirans, Isère, local media report.  Smoke rising from the facility could be seen for miles.

Workers were able to evacuate the 500 square meter facility with no injuries reported.

Firefighters attacked the blaze with four lines, one of which was a large-diameter nozzle. However, flames were too intense for firefighters to enter the building.

Fire officials reported concern that the highly flammable lithium stored inside could result in explosions.

Firefighters brought the fire under control in less than 75 minutes. An investigation into the cause is continuing.
