A massive historic manufacturing plant unoccupied since the late 1990s received extensive damage Saturday in northern Illinois.

At about 5 a.m., fire broke out at the Atwood building in Rockford, 87 miles northwest of Chicago, local media report. The fire soon escalated to four alarms, drawing five aerials and eight engine companies in response.

Fire Chief Derek Bergsten told WQRF that portions of the structure collapsed during the fire. Small explosions inside the plant were heard.

After six and a half hours, firefighters declared the blaze under control. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
