An explosion Sunday night at a chemical plant that resounded across northwest Ohio collapsed a tank structure but posed no threat to the community.

Shortly before 8 p.m., firefighters responded to the INEOS Chemicals plant in Lima after the report of a tank collapse, the Shawnee Township Fire Department Facebook page reports.

“Currently there are no injuries, there is no threat to the community, nor was there a threat from this incident,” the Facebook page reports. “Our crews are still operating on scene and will be for the next several hours.”

The Allen County Emergency Management Agency posted the same information to their Facebook site.

No information on the contents of the tank or its industrial purpose was immediately available.

The facility, located just outside Lima, is part of a complex of industrial plants adjoining the Husky Lima Refinery. Employing 157 personnel, the plant generates 224 kilotons per annum of acrylonitrile, a key ingredient in acrylic fibers for clothing, carpets and blankets, and acetonitrile, a solvent used in solvents and medications.
