Multiple Fire and Rescue Service (FRS) crews remain on scene at a smoldering recycling facility burning since Wednesday afternoon in Brisbane, Australia.

Crews are being assisted by contractors utilizing heavy machinery to access deep seated areas of fire. The fire is buried within 20,000 cubic meters of compressed cardboard, plastic and paper, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Firefighters battled the fire nearly four hours before it was safe enough to enter the burning structure.

Smoke may continue to affect the area overnight and into the morning.

Nearby residents suffering from a respiratory condition should keep their medications close by. Smoke can decrease visibility so motorists should drive with caution and to conditions.
