A leaking effluent line at an oil refinery threatened surface water Tuesday morning in the San Francisco Bay area, the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services reports.

Shortly after 7 a.m., the Valero refinery in Benicia, California, reported a leak in the effluent line to their wastewater treatment plant. The city is located on the north bank of the Carquinez Strait.

The line runs parallel to Sulfur Springs Creek without crossing it.

“The leak has been stopped and proper clean up, notification, and mitigation procedures are being performed,” the governor’s office reports.

Fire personnel will continue to monitor the situation and will update the public if necessary.
