Fire spread to the roof of an industrial bakery Thursday afternoon in eastern England.
Firefighters with Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Services arrived at 3:30 p.m. to find flames spreading at a 100-meter by 70-meter warehouse building at the Signature Flatbreads plant in Dunstable, the fire brigades’ Twitter page states. The fire was traced to a conveyor belt moving through an oven.
A bakery spokesman told local media that the building’s sprinkler system activated as designed, allowing employees to safely evacuate the building. The fire was contained within fire safe wall panels.
The resulting damage shut down one of numerous production lines operated in the region.
Three fire crews from Luton and Stopsley used jet nozzles and breathing apparatus to bring the blaze under control within several hours. An aerial platform and water carrier also joined the response team.
