Firefighters battled a warehouse fire several hours Wednesday near Mexico City.

Fire destroyed nearly 2,000 square meters of warehouse space Wednesday morning at a cotton factory in Valle de Chalco Solidaridad near Mexico City, local media reports.

Beside cotton, the warehouse stored highly flammable solvents, plastic, paint, cardboard and wood, the website Excelsior reports.

The fire, first reported at 2 a.m., produced heavy smoke and flames up to 20 meters high that threatened overhead power lines. Authorities ordered the surrounding neighborhood evacuated while firefighters organized multiple attacks on the fire at key points.

A mutual aid request brought firefighters from the nearby communities of Ixtapaluca, Tlahuac and Iztapalapa. Working together, responder brought the fire under control within several hours.

Authorities said that no injuries were reported.
