A transformer fire created thick smoke throughout a food processing plant Saturday morning in eastern Spain.

Firefighters extinguished the fire at the Vicky Foods industrial complex in Villalonga without major damage. Operations were expected to resume Monday.

At about 7:45 a.m. flames began spreading from a section of the plant reserved for baby food, local media reports. Smoke was so thick that authorities ordered homes near the plant evacuated.

Firefighters from the surrounding communities of Catarroja, Gandia, Olivia, Ontinyent and Paterna responded to the scene.

Of chief concern was the risk that flames could reach an underground diesel storage tank, fire authorities said. Explosions were heard inside the plant during the fire.
