A massive fire Monday afternoon that swept through a south Brazilian chemical company threatened residential neighborhoods nearby, the Bombeiros São Paulo Twitter site reports.

Shortly after noon, fire was reported at a chemical plant specializing in fluids for automobiles in Guarulhos, the second largest city in São Paulo state. Aerial video shows separate fires throughout the complex with black smoke towering above.

An initial response of 12 emergency vehicles would eventually rise to 24 vehicles supporting more than 60 firefighters.

JP News reports that flames had spread to homes in the surrounding Cumbica neighborhood near the Guarulhos International Airport.

An update issued shortly after 4 p.m. reported the fire under control but with firefighters still on site.
