Two people died and seven were injured in an explosion Thursday at the Astron Energy’s Milnerton refinery in Cape Town, South Africa.
Extensive damage could be seen to one unit of the 100,000 barrel per day refinery in the wake of the explosion. The fire has been contained but not without shutting down the refinery.
At about 4 a.m., fire was reported at South Africa’s third-biggest crude oil refinery. The refinery was restarting after an extended period of maintenance, local media report.
Two of the injured remain hospitalized. An investigation into the explosion is ongoing.
